Penlac Medication (Ciclopirox) - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Ciclopirox

Ciclopirox is an antifungal medication. Ciclopirox helps to prevents fungus from growing. Ciclopirox is in a class of medications known as antifungals. Ciclopirox is a synthetic broad-spectrum antifungal agent that inhibits the growth of dermatophytes, a type of fungus that grows on the skin, hair, and nails. Penlac is an antifungal agent used to treat fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails in patients who has normal immune system (immunocompetent).

Penlac Dosage

• For fungus infections treatment, You should be applied cream two times a day, morning and evening.
• For seborrheic dermatitis treatment, you should apply 1 teaspoon two times a week for four weeks with at least three days between each application.

Uses of Penlac

• Ciclopirox topical cream and lotion are used to treat skin infections such as includes athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and yeast infections.
• Ciclopirox shampoo is also used to treat seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp.
• Ciclopirox topical nail lacquer is used to treat fungal infections of the toenails and fingernails.

Side Effects of Penlac

If you are using Penlac, then discuss the side effects of Penlac with your doctor and if you feel any change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of Penlac may include:

• severe itching
• redness
• burning
• dryness
• irritation of the skin

Warnings and precautions before taking Penlac:

• If you have any disease that affects your immune system, such as including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome (SCID), cancer, cold sores, diabetes, flaky, itchy, or crusty skin, then tell your doctor.
• You should keep Penlac away from the eyes and mucous membranes. You should also be avoided contact with any skin outside the immediate area of the nail. For external use only.
• Do not use nail polish or other cosmetic nail products on the treated nails.

Drug Interaction:- If you are using certain drugs with Penlac, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Penlac. So do not start any medication without talking with your doctor. Because it may cause to another serious effects.

Overdose

An overdose of Penlac is unlikely to occur. But after taking Penlac, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately.
