Alinia Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Nitazoxanide

NITAZOXANIDE (Alinia™) is an antibiotic medicine used to treat diarrhea caused by protozoa means single cell animals. Most common protozoal infections in the US are cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis. Alinia may also be used to treat infections, that are caused by other organisms.

Alinia Dosage

• You should be taken this medication with food and Alinia should be given to children who have ages between 1 and 11 years old.
• The dosage of oral suspension is 1 teaspoon every 12 hours for 3 days and this dosage is recommended for only who have ages between 1 to 3 years old.
• Recommended dosage for person who have ages 12 years and older is 5 teaspoons of oral suspension or one 500-milligram tablet every 12 hours for 3 days.

Uses of Alinia

• Nitazoxanide is used to treat diarrhea in adults and children that may occur due to protozoa Giardia lamblia.
• Nitazoxanide is also used to treat diarrhea that may caused by the protozoa Cryptosporidium parvum.

Side Effects of Alinia

If you are taking alinia, then discuss the side effects of medication with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for your child to continue using Alinia. The following side effects of alinia may includes:

• Discolored urine
• enlarged salivary glands
• eye discoloration (pale yellow)
• dizziness
• fatigue and bodily discomfort
• fever
• gas
• increased appetite
• increased liver enzymes
• infection
• itching
• loss of appetite
• nausea
• runny nose
• sweating

Warnings and precautions before taking Alinia:

• If you have any allergies, then tell your doctor before taking alinia.
• If your child has diabetes, then you should be aware. Because alinia contains about 1 teaspoon of sugar per dose.
• If you have liver disease, kidney disease, weak immune system, then tell the doctor before taking this medication.
• Do not use over-the-counter medications to treat diarrhea without talking or checking with your doctor.

Drug Interaction:-If you are taking certain drugs with alinia, then other drugs may decreased or increased and altered the effects. So it is important to check with your doctor before combining Alinia with the following drugs such as includes:

• fosphenytoin
• phenytoin
• some medicines for diabetes
• warfarin

Overdose

If you are taking alinia and after taking you feel that the overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may cause to the another serious effects. Symptoms of a nitazoxanide overdose are not known.
