Ceftin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Cefuroxime axetil

CEFUROXIME (Ceftin®) is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treats many kinds of infections such as including respiratory tract, sinuses, ear, and urinary tract. Cefuroxime also treats some sexually transmitted disease. Ceftin is an antibiotic in a class of drugs is known as cephalosporins. Ceftin works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Cefuroxime is a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic, chemically similar to penicillin.

Ceftin Dosage

• For throat and tonsil infections, usual dose is 250 milligrams 2 times a day for 10 days.
• For sinus infection, You should take dosage of 250 or 500 milligrams 2 times a day for 5 to 10 days.
• For early lyme disease, usual dosage is 500 milligrams taken twice a day for 20 days.

Uses of Ceftin

• Ceftin is used to treat different types of bacterial infections such as inlcuding bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, ear infections, skin infections, gonorrhea, and urinary tract infections.
• It is also used to treat acute bacterial bronchitis in patients who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Side Effects of Ceftin

If you are using ceftin, then discuss the side effects of ceftin with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects of ceftin may include:

• Diaper rash in infants
• diarrhea
• nausea
• vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Ceftin:

• Tell your doctor, if you have any medical conditions such as including kidney or liver disease, colitis, or stomach problems.
• If you are taking any prescription and nonprescription medications such as includes vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products, tell your doctor. Your doctor may change the doses of your medications and monitor you carefully for side effects.
• If you have allergic on penicilline, then you can also be allergic on Ceftin. Tell your doctor or that your doctor knows any allergies, which you have.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with ceftin, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of ceftin. It may cause another serious effects. So discuss with your doctor before combining ceftin with the other drugs. If diarrhea occurs while taking Ceftin, consult your doctor before taking an antidiarrhea medication. Because certain drugs such as include lomotil, may cause your diarrhea to become worse. If you are taking potent water pills such as include Lasix while on Ceftin and you should take this medication with caution, because the combination could affect your kidneys.

Overdose

After taking ceftin, if you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a Ceftin overdose may include:

• nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• abdominal cramps
• seizures.
